THE TRAP CLOSES

MURRAY had come up on the trail, and his men were dog-tired and dirty; there was something about them that had been missing before. Wint said to the captain, stopping in the heat of early morning:

“Have you ever hunted?”

“Hunted?”

“With a dog, I mean, say with a pointer after quail and watched the way he quartered the ground.”

“I hate hunting,” Murray said. “I always thought there was something bad about a man who had to hunt.”

Wint shrugged and said: “I like it, but that doesn’t matter. I was thinking of the men. Look at them.”

“They’re tired.”

“They want to fight now–they didn’t want to before.”

“They want to find what they’re looking for,” Murray said. “You get that way. You dream about those damned Indians. You feel that there’s nothing else in the world.”
